As we explored the culturally rich city of Marrakesh – see link for 3 Nights in MARRAKESH-Part 1 , our last day was spent at Jardin Majorelle (the famous, Yves Saint Laurent Garden). This botanic garden is the most visited in Morocco, it took the French Painter Jacques Majorelle 40 years to create this enchanting garden in the heart of ‘Ochre City’ in Marrakesh.
Jacques Majorelle (amateur Botanist) dedicated his life’s work to this garden and as he traveled, he enjoyed gardening and brought back with him plants from around the world to communicate with people he met in his travels their shared passion for botany. During his travels, he purchased hundreds of rare varieties of trees and plants: cacti, palm trees, bamboo, coconut palms, thujas, weeping willows, carob trees, jasmine, agaves, white water lilies, datura, cypress, bougainvilleas, and ferns.
He decided to make the garden open to the public in 1947, unfortunately as his health deteriorated, he was forced to sell the garden as he couldn’t manage to care for it.
Yves St Lauren discovered this garden in 1966 and would visit very day thereafter, he later bought the garden with Pierre Bergé in 1980 saving it from real estate developers turning it into a hotel chain- thanks to him otherwise, we won’t have such beauty to behold today!
He renamed and lived in Villa Oasis whilst restoring the garden- staying true to the visions of Jacques Majorelle.
The painter’s studio was tranformed into a museam open to the public housing the personal berber collections of Yves Saint Lauren and Pierre Bergé.
When he sadly passed away in 2008, a memorial was built in the garden.
After an afternoon exploring the beauty of Jardin Majorelle, we were beginning to crave something Moroccan and stopped by a tagine restaurant for some couscous and beef, chicken or lamb tagine- so yum!!
I hope you have enjoyed exploring Marrakesh with me! I totally enjoyed every bit of my time here and sure to visit again very soon!
