As you know by now, looking after the skin is one of my favorite topic. Today I will share with you the organic skincare products I use for my body and hair.
My hair transition began in 2019 when I gradually phased from chemically processed hair to natural. This was a big move for me at the time as my natural hair is coarse and thick. I never imagined I could manage the transition but it became necessary when my chemically processed hair started to fall off and my hair density became lighter and thinner. At that point, I had to do something.
So, I made the decision to transition to organic natural products. At the same time I started suffering from severe dry skin – it felt like my body was trying to tell me something.
Eventually, I listened. In 2016, I started researching into natural organic products that could help cure my dry skin. I started with my body lotion. I was on holiday to Marrakech in March 2016, when I stumbled across Argan Oil in the Souk. It was interesting speaking to the locals about the benefits of argan oil and watching the producers cold press the kernel seeds to bring out this oil – for those who do not know. Argan oil is a plant oil produced from the kernels of the argan tree (Argania spinosa L.) that is endemic to Morocco. In Morocco, argan oil is used to dip in bread during breakfast. Also to drizzle on couscous or pasta. They also make use of it for cosmetic purposes.
GOING ORGANIC: Hair and Body
Immediately, I became fascinated by this oil and proceeded to buy large bottles of the oil for my hair and body . I must confess that argan oil did not disappoint. For someone whose hair was falling out and thinning as a result, I was desperate to find an organic product to fix this issue. As I read more on argan oil, it became apparent that it can potentially fix my hair problem as it’s rich in antioxidant and vitamins.
According to celebrity stylist, Kevin Hughes who describes argan oil to be ‘ an Age-old beauty secret’ and “With its high content of antioxidants, essential fatty acids, and vitamin E, the benefits of argan oil naturally help to increase hair’s elasticity and consistently restore shine to dull, lifeless hair.”
Here are some benefits of this oil:
- Add Moisture: As I mentioned that I was suffering from dryness of skin so was my hair. Argan oil helps add moisture to the body and scalp. It keeps the body hydrated , thanks to the high quantities of vitamin E.
- Reduce Wrinkles: When the skin is getting older, we lose elasticity and collagen ( the building blocks of the skin). Argan oil is found to improve elasticity in postmenopausal women.
- Spots and Brighter Skin: If/when suffering from spots caused by hormones, aging, exposure to the sun for years or hyperpigmentation, argan oil can help improve and brighten your skin tone. Animal studies also suggest it can help speed up healing from burn scars.
- Reduce breakage / falling off: I found that argan oil helped prevent my hair from further breakage and thinning. With its high Vitamin E content, it helps restore hair and prevents hair damage. Massaging the oil on split ends is advantageous. It is also rich in Omega 3 fatty acid which helps restore hair and prevents split ends.
- Eliminates Itchy and Dry Scalp: Argan oil can serve as a deep conditioner for the scalp. Using this oil to gently massage into the hair daily helped prevent itchy scalp and eliminate itchiness. Put 4-6 drops on your palm each day applying to the hair thereby stimulating blood circulation.
- Boost shine and hair growth: It is rich in fatty acid but unlike coconut oil, argan oil easier absorbs into the skin boosting shine without leaving buildups. As we know now that argan oil is rich in vitamin E, it increases in cell productions and nourishes hair follicles.
ADOPTING OTHER ORGANIC PRODUCTS
Now that you know my journey with dry skin damaged hair, the transition journey moved even further to totally eradicating chemicals on my hair and I started more natural products for hair such as unrefined shea butter, essential oils, Jojoba and black castor oil. As we journey together I will share with you my full hair transition, where I am now since going natural in 2019 and what I intend for the future with my hair and skin.
In late 2019, I changed my body wash to Aveeno. Why? Because the Aveeno body wash for very dry skin is formulated with Probiotic Triple Oat. This helps to improve the balance of the skin’s natural microbiome and reduced the dryness tremendously. I can’t stop sharing my experience of Aveeno products.
Have you tried their product? What do you think?
Hope you find this post a useful read.
Until next time, take good care and keep looking after yourself.
